How To Do a Trunk or Treat at Church

First, make sure your church is on board with this. Some churches have Reformation parties, others have autumn events or a Fall Festival. As I said, I had never heard of Trunk or Treat before and can only assume it is a regional phenomenon–at the very least it has yet to hit the St. Louis area where I grew up.

Second, you will want to get enough trunks (cars) to make at least two aisles of cars in your parking lot. This will depend on the size of your parking lot, but I found that 6 or 7 cars in two aisles facing one another makes for a smoother operation. It keeps the children on your premises a bit longer and allows you to speak more with them and their families.

Third, provide hotdogs, chips and sodas. This is an extremeley cost-effective way to keep the families around that much longer to be able to evangelize, invite and minister to them.

Fourth, have some games to play. (See our Fall preschool games for ideas.) They do not need to be big or involved games. The kids just need to be able to win more candy. You can also hand out gospel tracts as part of their winnings. Make sure that everyone wins every time!

Fifth, and finally, rent a bounce house. Inevitably, the church children are going to get bored. This will give them something to do during the festivities. The children from the community will not want to stick around too long because they want to hit as many houses as possible.

Be sure you have enough candy and make certain you have fun while doing this. Have fun and redeem the time for the Lord!

Share Your Trunk or Treat Ideas

If you have experience with this type of event, please leave a comment to share your thoughts. What type of games worked best? What other attractions did you offer? Was your congregation uneasy about connecting the church and Halloween?

Need More Help? Then read about Trunk or Treat on Kidology or read some tips for planning a church trunk or treat on the Memory Cross blog.

What follows is my rough paraphrase and summary of a talk from the 2010 Connecting Church and Home Conference. In this break-out session, Randy Stinson assumed a basic understanding of Ephesians 5:22-33. This message was more about an application for husbands as they lead their families. There are nine applications that build on one another.

Randy Stinson is the Dean of the School of Church Ministries at Southern Seminary. Dr. Stinson also serves as the president of The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood.

Vision—Paint a broad picture for your family as to where you see your family going in the future.

Direction—This is how you will get there. Here you have mapped out the steps it will take in getting from point A to point B. It would be best to perhaps set up a family creed or confession of sorts to help keep you rooted.

Instruction—You need to prepare your family for the inevitable obstacles. It is here where you become proactive rather than reactive.

Imitation—Your children are watching you whether you realize it or not. You need to be able to say to them, do as I do. This is the heart of leadership and discipleship. It is important that here you model what it means to be repentant. You are going to mess up and your kids will see that. They will also see how you respond to your mistakes.

Inspiration—Here you need to develop a group thought of “isn’t this great?” Think of yourself as a general in charge of the morale of your troops.

Affirmation—You need to tell each individual in your group that they are doing well. This is especially more true to affirm your wife (or husband) than your children. Nonetheless, it is important that you are affirming to everyone in your house. Point out the evidence’s of God’s grace in their lives even if they have messed up.

Evaluation—This is key to make sure you are staying the course. Here lies the true burden of leadership. I have found that the more you evaluate the less of a burden it becomes.

Correction—Be willing to make changes as the need arises. Not everything you begin or do is going to work.

Protection and Provision—You need to make sure your family knows that you will take care of them. It is one thing to say this but something completely different to actually do it. This includes the spiritual realm that so often gets relegated to the mother—especially if the family is homeschooling.

Ultimately, I (Terry) found this break-out session to be both convicting and encouraging. It helped to put some meat on the skeleton insofar as what this really looks like in the home.

What follows is a rough paraphrase and summary from the 2010 Connecting Chruch & Home Conference. This session was comprised of the eleventh chapter of the forthcoming book, Trained in the Fear of God edited by Randy Stinson and Timothy Paul Jones. While we did not delve deep into each point Schemm has, we did gain a lot of insight through his trials and errors as well as his answering of questions for those who are struggling with making their home more gospel-centered.

Pete Schemm Pete Schemm serves as Associate Professor of Theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC. He is the former editor of the Journal for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. He was also Associate Editor and a contributor to A Theology for the Church (B&H). He currently serves as a Shepherd’s Training instructor at Open Door Baptist Church and has also served as pastor, associate pastor, and interim pastor of churches in North Carolina and Georgia. Pete and Vicki, his wife of seventeen years, have eight children: Charis, Colby, Jacob, Zachary, Parker, Anderson, Mary Kathryn, and Chase.

You can listen to audio from this conference on the Southern Seminary website.

Six Habits of Gospel-Centered Homes

The six habits Pete called for to make the home more gospel-centered (and these are in no particular order):

Reciting the Apostle’s Creed together—this is the fundamental creed that spans all Christian doctrinal differences and has been around for centuries giving your child a historic mooring to the Christian faith. A book entitled The Essence of Christian Doctrine has just recently been published. It is centered on The Apostle’s Creed and would be an excellent resource for the family seeking to memorize this particular creed.

Reading Scripture together—You have heard us espouse this here at Ministry To Children over and over! there are numerous Children’s Bibles we do recommend.

Catechism—Teaching your children historic catechism will be both beneficial to you and them. We have recommended a few here as well.

Singing together—We are all familiar with Ephesians 5:19 that we should sing “Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.” That does not stop with the corporate worship—it is just as fundamentally true for the home as it is for the local body of believers.

Prayer—Again, we have discussed much of this here, but Pete challenged everyone to pray together as a family more than just at meals.

Table Talk—This stems from something Martin Luther used to do with his students and those who would eat meals with him and his family. This may be the most effective way in which you can begin the reformation in your home to its becoming more gospel-centered. This is very easy to do as all you really need to do is ask a question and allow those at the dinner table to answer.

After discussing these six points briefly, we had a chance to ask some questions. This was perhaps the most beneficial aspect to this hour long break-out session. I will attempt to summarize the questions and answers.

Q: How do you choose a catechism and what do you do if you do not agree with some of the questions and answers?

A: Choose a more historic catechism—I (Pete) do not personally use a catechism that is less than 100 years old. As for questions and answers you disagree with, there are two options. First, simply do not work on those you disagree with or, second, memorize them as they are listed but then offer to your children why you disagree with it. The latter method will cultivate a thinking mind and help your children to measure everything they believe according to scripture.

Q: How can you model a gospel-centered home for others to see? How can you bring others into your home to “see” how this works without making them feel awkward?

A: Focus on your home and the needs therein and others will flock to you because they see something different. As for not making others feel awkward, just go about your family business and be as natural as possible. In other words, do not line your kids up to show them off! You will see that doing this natural will be more powerful than any program you could ever initiate in your church.

Q: How often should we do these habits?

A: First, this is not an exhaustive list nor am I saying you must do these six things. But, I would say slowly at first. It takes time and persistence. If I had to give a number, I would say my family regularly does 4 of the 6 in any given week. Think about what you want your life and family to look like and then move in that direction.

Q: If you want to start this immediately in your home and begin to change the culture in your church, where would you begin first?

A: It really depends on your situation in the home. If your husband is talkative, I would have him read Scripture—there are numerous children’s Bibles available. If he is not talkative, perhaps reading is not the best bet. It really depends on each situation, but Bible Intake and prayer are probably the two most important overall.

Pete concluded with this golden nugget of a comment:

Remember, it is not about indoctrination, it is about inspiration. In other words, you want to inspire your children rather than force the issues.

Questions Asked

These are some of the questions that you may be asked in the course of your ministry.

How do we know that the Bible we read today is what they wrote so long ago?

Didn’t man decide what was going to be in the Bible?

The Bible is full of errors, how can we know if it is telling the truth?

Manuscript Evidence

The truth is, we do not have the actual original documents that were written by the apostles, prophets, kings, and others that comprise our Bible. Still, we can quickly and easily show in a tangible, scientific manner, that we can know that what we are reading today is, in fact, what was written long ago (yes, in another language).

In answering these charges, you can begin by asking the child if he questions any other “old” book. Ask him if he has heard of Plato or Aristotle or Homer (not Simpson!) from ancient Greek. If he has, ask him if he asks the same questions about their writings. If he has not, quickly explain that they were great philosophers and writers whose writings are still widely read and applied today.

Once you have introduced these three men from the past, you are now ready to show how the Bible compares to these books. Use the following “chart”:

Author, Date Written, Date of Earliest Extant Copy (not destroyed), # of copies

Plato, 400 B.C., 900 A.D. (1300 years from date written), 7

Aristotle, 350 B.C., 1100 A.D. (1450 years), 49

Homer (The Illiad), 900 B.C., 400 B.C. (500 years), 643

Where does the Bible stand in comparison to these numbers?

Old Testament

Written by many people over 1200 years.

Approximately written from 1600 BC to 400 BC.

We have extensive copies of the OT dated around 250 B.C. (150-1350 years)

Over 14,000 copies have been discovered to date.

New Testament

Written by many in the first century

Written from about 50 A.D. to no later than 95 A.D.

Many copies have been found that date around 130 A.D. with over 800 copies dating before 1000 A.D. (35-900 years)

Over 5,600 copies have been discovered to date.

Obviously, this information is probably not going to mean anything to a 7 year old. It will; however, start to show the children tangible evidence that the Bible can be trusted. These numbers are a bit tough to understand at first. You will probably have to do some explaining as to what “extant” means, but the sheer numbers and dates help to make the case for the authenticity of the Bible.

Again, this is not a lesson. This information is meant to offer solid answers to some of the tougher questions we get in the Children’s ministry. We pray this information helps you, the teacher, as well to “always be prepared.”

Welcome K-Love Fans! Use this free coloring page to help your kids celebrate John 3:16 Day.

Here is a printable coloring sheet to use in your children’s ministry. We first posted it for Valentine’s Day, but you could also use it on March 3-16 for John 316 day. It has the text of John 3:16 in a heart shape. The letters in the Bible verse are aligned to show the word “Valentine” down the center of the heart. This coloring craft could also be used at home, in Sunday School, or in a Christian preschool class.

Directions: To print this Bible coloring page, click on the image or the link below to download as a PDF file.

A reader has also submitted a version of this coloring sheet. Here are the links.

They show how Jesus is God’s gift of love to this world and include the John 3:16 Bible reference.

Optional Valentine Craft Idea: Instead of using the coloring sheet, make your own. For this simple activity, you will need heart shaped construction paper and dark writing utensils (markers, crayons, pens). All you need to do is have the kids write the word “Valentine” vertically just right of the center of the heart and then fill in the words below. You will end up writing out John 3:16. You may want to write “Valentine” yourself on the hearts if you have time.

For God so Loved the World that
He gave His
Only Son that
Whoever believes
In Him
Should not
Perish but have
Eternal
Life

–John 3:16

Have you ever been asked the following question?

How can the Holy Spirit be a person in the Trinity and yet He cannot be seen and does not take up any space like all people do?

This is a simple object lesson that incorporates science to demonstrate one aspect of the doctrine of the Trinity. Many children begin to get curious about the Holy Spirit as they grow older. They do not think it is logical to be a person and not be seen while still alive. Be careful not to mistakenly offer a pantheistic answer and say that God is in everything! That is different than saying God is everywhere (which is called God’s omnipresence. See Psalm 139:7-10).

Materials Needed

Paper towel

2 Large Cups or Glasses

Tub of water (while a tub is preferable, a bucket will work)

The Set-up

So how do you answer the above question? I have found a simple experiment helps the children to understand how something can exist yet not be seen and not take up any space. Ask the kids if they can think of anything they use on a daily basis that would have these same qualities. Allow them to give some answers. Some of your older children may answer correctly, but many will not think along the lines. (The correct answer is Oxygen but don’t say it just yet!)

The Experiment

Fill the tub with water. Take a paper towel and put it in the cup. Ask the children what will happen if you put the cup in the water–will the towel get wet or will it stay dry? Allow for some answers. Presumably, the kids will be giving both answers–wet and dry.

First show them how the paper towel stays dry by placing the cup perpendicularly in the water. The air in the cup will force the water to around the cup keeping the paper towel dry. As you are showing the dry paper towel, explain to the children that we don’t see the air and that everything in the room is surrounded by the air but it would appear that the air does not take up any space. However, the air took up space in the cup so that water could not get it.

The science is that the pocket of air in the cup cannot escape and therefore keeping the water from entering the cup.

The Explanation

Even though we can’t see the air, we can see that it has properties that can be seen. This is true of the Holy Spirit. Those who have the invisible Holy Spirit living inside them will have visible evidence. At this point, take the opportunity to share Gal. 5:22-25.

“Always [be] prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you”
–1 Peter 3:15

Recently, we interviewed Ken Ham and he talked about the need for apologetics to be taught in the Sunday School room and in the church in general. We, here at Ministry to Children, want to aid in that. Therefore, we are going to begin a new section of teachings or articles. These are not lesson plans, but they can be aids to your lesson plans. Our prayer is that you will be able to use these in your lesson preparation and teaching time. We would like to begin this new section with an introduction to apologetics.

What is apologetics?

Good question! I can tell you that it is not where you go around apologizing for being a Christian. What I can tell you is that apologetics is derived from the Greek apologia which means “defense.” This word is used in the original Greek text in Acts 24:10 and 25:8 and 1 Peter 3:15.

The use of Apologetics

I would like to tell you upfront that the use of apologetics and extra-biblical research and findings should not be used to attempt to argue someone into faith in Christ Jesus. Rather, they can (and should) supplement one’s faith and provide answers to legitimate questions and concerns regarding the Christian faith and its historicity. No, only the Holy Spirit can guide someone to faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

What kind of information will be provided?

What we will be providing for you here at Ministry to Children are some resources and factual information to use when you are teaching. This information can vary from what we call manuscript evidence (comparing ancient writings of the Bible to each other and to other books throughout history), it can be archaeological evidence (this is something very tangible for the children), or it can be scientific information “discovered” by man and supported by the Bible. Finally, much of what we will offer will dabble in philosophical arguments. Do not fear! These will not be difficult and will help your children to critically analyze the Bible. After all, the Bible has withstood criticism and skepticism for over 2,000 years. We will begin with evidence for the authority of the Bible. We will be using the acronym M.A.P.S.

MtC: What do you believe is the solution to the mass exodus taking place with the younger generation?

Ken: Churches need to do a better job of teaching young people how to defend their faith. Our research shows that, for the most part, young adults are not taught about the Bible as a true book of history, nor how to defend the Scriptures against the faith-shattering attacks of this age, such as evolution and the belief that the earth is millions of years old. Apologetics teaching is basically missing from the church. This has greatly contributed to the decline of the church and its influence on our culture.

MtC: What curriculum’s would you recommend for ministers to children and youth to use during their various times of ministries?

Ken: For starters, from our ministry of Answers in Genesis, there is: the History Revealed Curriculum, the God’s Design for Science Curriculum Set, the Demolishing Strongholds Curriculum Set and my DVD, “The State of the Nation.” And Master Books produces many fine resources as well.

MtC: What can parents do to teach their children the assurance of the reliability of the Bible?

First, they must realize that they can no longer depend on Sunday schools and youth ministries to educate their children in the things of God. The family is the educational unit that God created to transmit the knowledge of godly, biblical teachings to the next generation. So education begins in the home.

Your first priority as a parent is to live the Word of God in a natural, sincere way. If you try to preach it to your kids without living it, you’ll only add to the hypocrisy that has turned so many of them away.

Second, you need to realize that our society is no longer a Christian one. Our children are living in a culture that is saturated with counter-Christian messages built on a foundation of evolutionary secular humanism. It’s your job to protect your kids and prepare them for life in this post-Christian society. You need to teach them how to answer the skeptical questions of this age. Show them that you do not compromise God’s Word with man’s fallible word. Teach them to stand on the authority of the Word and to defend the Christian faith.

Make the Word of God a natural presence in your home, and evaluate your church to make sure it is living and teaching the Word. You may have to make a decision to stay as an agent of change, or join a church that already shares your stand in these areas.

This post is part 2 of 3 of our special interview with Ken Ham, the president of Answers in Genesis. Here are the links to read part one and part three.

MtC: You recently wrote a book entitled “Already Gone” with the help of research performed by Britt Beemer. While it is safe to say that many in the church are concerned with the mass exodus taking place of young men and women, you and Britt sought the “real reasons” as to why this is so. What is the most shocking statistic you discovered in writing this book?

Note: You can read a review of this book from ChristianBookNotes.com here.

Ken: One of the most revealing discoveries was that, contrary to what most of us may have believed, we are not losing most of these young people during college. Actually, around 40 percent are gone in their hearts and minds by the end of middle school and more than 40 percent more by the end of high school. In other words, before college, more than 80 percent were “already gone” from the church.

MtC: Is there anything else about the research from the book that surprised you?

Ken: We were stunned to discover that Sunday school is one of the reasons why our kids are leaving church, which is absolutely contrary to what we would have expected. Our programs of Christian education are failing dismally. When compared to those who never went to Sunday school, more Sunday school attendees who no longer go to church believe the church is less relevant and they have become increasingly anti-church over the years.

Incredible as it may sound, they are even more inclined to accept abortion, “gay” marriage, and other unbiblical actions of our day. The startling conclusion is that, on the whole, the Sunday school programs of today are statistical failures – and are actually detrimental.

I know that’s going to hurt many people who are dedicated to Sunday school programs, as well as those who are depending on these programs to properly influence our children. I applaud their dedication to educating our children.

MtC: The charge has been leveled that it really does not matter if we believe in six 24-hour days or time periods amounting to millions of years. Could you please explain why it does matter what is believed regarding the creation account as told in Genesis 1?

A belief that the earth is millions of years old undermines the authority of the Book of Genesis and the Bible as a whole—plus its doctrine of sin and atonement. If one takes outside ideas (e.g., millions of years) and uses this to justify reinterpreting Scripture (e.g., reinterpreting the six days of creation as long ages), then one has opened a door to undmine the authority of Scripture itself—giving man authority over God’s Word.

Since we’ve been bombarded in our culture with a belief in millions of years of history, this — probably more than anything in our day –has caused people (including many in the church) to doubt the Bible’s account in Genesis. The reason the millions of years belief is so important to the secular world is because if secular scientists don’t have millions of years to make evolution happen, then the only alternative to explain our existence is to admit that there is an intelligence that created the world in a relatively short period of time. The research for our book “Already Gone” showed clearly that the age of the earth was a major issue in causing many young people to doubt the Bible and lead to unbelief. Theologically, it’s clear from Genesis that the world was created perfect, and there was no animal or human death before Adam fell into sin. If you believe in millions of years, you are also saying that there was death before Adam. That undermines the atonement message of why Christ came to earth.

But hear us out: if you are depending on these programs to properly teach and influence your children, it is just not happening. We need some radical changes in how we teach and what is taught in Sunday school and elsewhere.

Ken Ham (Ken): I like to call myself “a missionary from Australia to America” – particularly to the American church, calling it back to the authority of the Word of God beginning in Genesis.

I left a position as a science teacher in Queensland in 1979 to commit myself full-time to spreading the message of creation, biblical authority, and the gospel after being engaged in part-time creation speaking for three years.

Even when our ministry was operating out of our home in Australia, we had a burden, but it was one that took more than 25 years to accomplish. I remember praying with a friend of mine about building a Creation Museum. Little did we know then that our burden would be transported across the Pacific Ocean and eventually realized in America in 2007.

Our family moved to the United States in 1987 after I had already had many speaking engagements there, and in 1994, we founded Answers in Genesis. AiG is an apologetics ministry dedicated to enabling Christians to defend their faith and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ effectively in today’s very secularized culture. We focus particularly on providing answers to questions surrounding the book of Genesis, because it is the most-attacked book of the Bible in this era of history.

MtC: How did you come to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

Ken: I grew up in Australia, which is a pagan country with very few Christians. I praise the Lord that I grew up in a Christian home with a mother and father who stood on the Word of God. Liberal theology was already rampant in the church in those days, and my father taught me to recognize compromise and liberal theology miles away. He may not have known the word “apologetics,” and he may not have had all the answers, but he didn’t question God’s Word.

My father was a public school teacher, and he was transferred all over the state of Queensland, to areas where there were very few churches. So my parents would start Sunday schools. Soon our home would become well-known as a stopping-off point for missionaries. My parents also connected with the Open Air Campaigners, a group that goes everywhere, including holding open-air meetings, to share the gospel with people who aren’t Christians.

At one of the Open Air meetings, when I was 10, the Open Air Campaigner gave a challenge to us: to be a missionary to the Lord. I came forward and said I wanted to be a missionary for the Lord, a missionary like my father.

MtC: You are most well-known for Answers in Genesis, what led to your starting this ministry?

Ken: In 1974, a friend at our church in Australia — someone I knew who was searching for answers to questions about evolution and millions of years — told me about a book that had been published in America. It was called “The Genesis Flood,” by Dr. Henry Morris and Dr. John Whitcomb, and it would later be recognized even by the famous evolutionist Stephen Jay Gould of Harvard as “the founding document of the creationist movement.”

In my search for this book, I went to the only Christian bookstore I knew of in the city of Brisbane and asked the manager if he had heard of “The Genesis Flood” … and if he carried it. He did! I found out later that the bookstore’s owner —who is now with the Lord — had a real burden to ensure this book was in his store. The answers in this book thrilled my soul. In fact, the Lord burdened me intensely to obtain whatever creation/Flood books I could from around the world — and then to tell as many people as I could about these answers.

To cut a long story short, reading “The Genesis Flood” in the 1970s was the beginning of a creation ministry that started in our home and then spread around the world. I had the awesome privilege of working for Dr. Morris for seven years at the Institute for Creation Research in California, before three of us (Mark Looy, Mike Zovath, and I) founded the Answers in Genesis ministry here in the Cincinnati area.
