Ten Commandment Song for Kids Worship

Last summer, we did a VBS program from the Go Fish Guys at my church. It was a great experience and we enjoyed the music that went along with it. One of my favorites was a song called the Ten Commandment Boogie.

It’s basically a kid friendly paraphrase of the 10 commandments in song form. This is a version of the ten commandment song they’ve uploaded to YouTube.

This is perfect to use in kids church. The video includes choreographed movements that make the song even more fun. When you buy the Go Fish VBS, this video comes along with the DVD. You can also buy the Let’s Sing DVD directly from their website. I expect this song to be in our kids church worship rotation for a long time.

It also helps kids learn the Ten Commandments. I was watching a movie with one of my daughters last month when the value of this song became clear to me. One character in the movie was facing some choices and seemed confused about what was right. I looked at my daughter and said, “They should just do the Ten Commandment Boogie.” She instantly laughed and remembered how relevant God’s Word is for that kind of situation.

What’s the Deal with Seeds Family Worship?

I am a big fan of music. I do have one criteria when it comes to the music I choose to listen to though – it has to be good. That criteria applies to my kids’ music as well. If they want to listen to bad music when they are by themselves, that’s fine. But, if we’re all going to listen to it together, it has to be good. I love to listen to music of all kinds. I think music plays an important role in our relationship with God, and consequently, I really enjoy praise and worship music. I also think it is important in discipling kids that we teach them how to worship and praise God through music, so I am constantly looking for good kids music to use on Sunday mornings. That was why I was excited when I heard about Seeds Family Worship who make music for kids that adults can enjoy listening to.

God’s Word + Great Music = Seeds Family Worship

I listen to enough praise and worship music that there are numerous passages in scripture that I can’t read without a line from a song popping into my head. In my family, we have routinely used music as part of memorizing scripture as well. When my son was four and five, we used to work on memorizing scripture verses together for his AWANA program, and we would make up simple songs to put the scripture to in order to make them more memorable. So, whether it is music meant for kids or parents, I love and appreciate good songs which include direct quotes from scripture. That’s why, when I first saw a video from Seeds here on Ministry-to-Children, I was compelled to find out more about them. Since then, I have featured a number of their songs on Dad in the Middle. Here is a sample from their YouTube page.

I love how the lyrics of this come directly from scripture. Each song is based on a particular verse (or verses) from the NIV translation of the Bible which are sung to original music. Mind you, there is a significant amount of writing that goes into making the song as well. It is not just someone reading a verse with some background music. The song is actually built around the scripture. Furthermore, the songs are simple enough that they will help kids to memorize scripture and engaging enough to keep parents interested. I can’t tell you how many times my entire family has listened to Seeds while driving somewhere in the van jamming to the song “Crushed” or or singing “Do Not Be Anxious” at the top of our lungs. The music spans a wide spectrum of styles, and you are bound to find numerous songs on each album that you will love.

The idea for Seeds Family Worship was birthed when worship leader Jason Houser was asked to write some songs to help kids at his local church memorize scripture for a summer Bible school program. We all have whoever asked Jason in the first place to thank for some great music that was born out of that original request!

The group has released five albums thus far including:

You won’t be disappointed. I mentioned earlier the number of times I find myself reading the Bible and having songs pop in to my head. What I didn’t mention was how often those songs are from Seeds.

The Importance of Worship Music for Kids

You’ve probably heard the saying, “He couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.” Well, I’m here to tell you that I’m not even qualified to carry the bucket. I have a child with a similar lack of musical giftedness though, so I can still understand how my Heavenly Father can enjoy listening to me sing even when it sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I have another son who, although young, definitely seems to have a gift for music. The one thing we all enjoy though is singing together. We like to ride around in the truck, role up the windows, and play the music really loud as we sing along. If Mom’s in the car, we turn the music down a little bit, but we still like to sing. We listen to the same songs, we talk about the lyrics, and we sing. That is the power of music, and that is why music should not, and can not, be an afterthought in your children’s ministry.

Singing to God and worshipping him in song is prescribed by the Bible. There is no age limit on this commandment, and part of our job as children’s ministers is to make sure that we are equipping kids to progress in their spiritual journey in all areas – including worshipping through song. To that end, we must endeavor to introduce them to songs that include deep spiritual truths and biblical references in songs and words that they can understand and will enjoy.

We should endeavor to find songs that kids can sing along with their parents. This means find songs simple enough for kids to sing along with but still engaging enough to maintain the interest of parents. Perhaps even more importantly, it means finding songs that are enjoyable for both kids and parents to listen to and sing. Finding songs that parents can sing with their kids holds tremendous opportunity for spiritual growth both for the children and their parents.

Oftentimes, I think people in children’s ministry gravitate towards “easier songs,” especially with younger children. One of my personal mantras when it comes to working with kids is that I do not want to underestimate them, and that applies to music as well. We shouldn’t assume that they are incapable of picking up more complex songs or understanding songs which present deeper theological truths. To be sure, we should do what we can to encourage their participation. This includes picking songs that they can sing along with, songs with music that they will like, and words that they can understand. I contend though that there are enough choices out there today that we can have the latter without sacrificing the former.

To be sure, there is plenty of so-called kids worship music out there that I have trouble sitting through let alone singing along to. Fortunately though, there are some sources of kids’ worship music which are great to listen to and still allow kids to worship. They include:

Fruit of the Spirit Song & Video for Children

Here is a cool Bible song for children I saw on another blog this morning. It’s from Brentwood Kids. It’s a scripture based song designed to teach kids Galatians 5:22-23. It takes a very fun approach to teach what fruits are not from the Spirit.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

This is a video that might be a good learning activity to accompany a Bible lesson about the fruit of the Spirit. You could also use it as a children’s church worship song. Either way, this upbeat song will make it easy for the children in your ministry to learn the fruit of the Spirit. You should also check out our Fruit of the Spirit Game for teaching kids.

New Sovereign Grace Kids Music “Walking with the Wise”

I’ve been a fan of the Sovereign Grace kids music for a few years and really enjoyed their first and second CDs. In fact, we used some of the songs for the worship music in our kids ministry programs. We’ve also handed them out as family worship resources for parents.

So, I was excited today to get an email about their latest project. It’s called “Walking with the Wise” and contains 13 songs inspired by the book of Proverbs. According to their website, the music is aimed at children ages 6-10. We found their other CDs appeal to a much broader age range, especially on the older side.

You can hear song samples on their website and even download a free track from the CD. I’ve been checking out the clips and really can’t wait to get copies out in our church. These songs teach biblical truth in a way that really sticks.

I love the way they keep bringing the lyrics back to Jesus and the Gospel. It’s easy to make ‘being wise’ a moral value that kids should work toward and forget that God’s grace is required. But these songs keep Jesus the focus and will help children to avoid a moralistic religion. Here is a great example from the song To Tell the Truth.

To tell the truth is what I want to do
Because You love the lips that speak the truth
To tell a lie leads me away from You
So help me, God, to tell the truth

You can see the real problem with lying is how it pushes us away from God. Just like all sin it works against our relationship with God. Consider the Gospel-focused message of the final song titled Who Can Say.

No one’s blameless in God’s holy eyes
That’s why the Savior came

Jesus, Jesus, only You did everything right

Again, Sovereign Grace has produced new kids music rich in biblical truth and the grace of God. I can’t think of anything I’d rather hear my little ones singing as they face the struggles of life. May God use this CD to help a generation of children walk with the wise.

Kids Worship Songs + Scripture Memorization Music

I’ve listened to quite a selection of Scripture cd’s over the past 30 years, but haven’t found any I like better than the Hide the Word cd’s put out by Mark Altrogge, senior pastor of Sovereign Grace Church in Indiana, Pennsylvania and writer of such great songs for worship as “I Stand in Awe” and “I’m Forever Grateful.” From Mark’s Forever Grateful Music website: “Hide the Word combines the power of music with the power of repetition to make memorizing God’s Word easy. Each Scripture, including its reference, is made into a song. Each Scripture is repeated at least 3 times per song. As you play the music while driving, doing dishes, or any other time throughout your day, you will find yourself quickly picking up the verses and recalling them from memory.”

This is all true, as I can attest to! The memorable arrangements and excellent production of these cd’s makes them irresistible. Kids and adults alike love them, and the fact that they make Scripture memorization so effortless and enjoyable makes them a truly wonderful resource. A total of eight cd’s—that’s over 160 Scriptures set to music—are available at the website. They will make helpful additions to your church’s and family’s efforts to memorize Scripture, and they make great gifts, as well. I intend to use them as giveaways and awards in our AWANA program.

Kids Worship Music: To Be Like Jesus (Sovereign Grace Music)

Finding children’s worship music that has biblical depth and musical excellence can be a challenge. That is one reason why I was excited to learn about the new CD for kids from Sovereign Grace Music. To Be Like Jesus contains 12 worship songs about the fruits of the Spirit. The album is inspired by Galatians 5:22-23, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

Morality Rooted in the Gospel

Normally, I am cautious about children’s resources that focus on being a good person. That kind of approach can leave out the Gospel and makes right morals the goal of Christianity. “Be a good little girl and God will love you” is never the message of the Bible.

But Sovereign Grace Music is always about the Gospel, and this album is no exception. Every song on this CD points listeners back to Jesus and his cross. Consider the words from the title track:

Theology Set To Music

I also appreciate the God-centered focus of this music. This album shows that true Christian character must be rooted in the character of God. Every song celebrates the Glory of God and several praise his specific attributes. Children will sing about God as the Creator, Provider, and Savior. They will exalt in his goodness and gracious attitude toward humanity. This music will help kids think rightly about God and grow in their love for Him.

Powerful Music That Enhances The Message

The music is excellent. The clear melody and frequent use of a children’s chorus will encourage kids to sing along. Most songs have an upbeat contemporary style, complete with a powerful bass rhythm, lead guitar, and drums. But there is variety, especially with the more contemplative songs that feature a piano accompaniment. The musical style of each song complements the lyrics.

Suggested Ways To Use This CD

I have ordered several copies of To Be Like Jesus to encourage families devotions in our church. We will also integrate a some of these songs into our regular children’s worship time during children’s church. Many older children will want to listen to this CD on their own.
