Church Nursery is Real Ministry

“No I can’t volunteer in the church nursery.
I come to church to get fed and that’s just babysitting.”

Does this sound familiar? Too many people think “babysitting” when we say church nursery. In truth, this can be a strategic place of ministry. Watch this video for some practical tips for making the church nursery a real ministry. Amy Dolan is the Conspire Team Leader at the Willow Creek Association, founder of Lemon Lime Kids, and a children’s ministry volunteer at First Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

I’ve been a nursery volunteer for a few years now and one of the things that I consider part of my ministry, especially when the child is really cranky, is that I’m giving that child’s parents the opportunity to be fed. I know that God wants to speak to each person who enters into worship, either in church or out of church, and I get to help God by allowing the parents to focus on what God has to say and not on the cry’s and other distractions of their child. I take very seriously the fact that we enter into a covenant when the parent dedicates a child because as a congregation we promise to be that community that will stand by the parent as they take on the responsibility of raising their child. So I know that as part of my ministry, I’m following through with my promise.
