Group's Egypt VBS 2010 Holy Land Adventure About Joseph

Group Publishing has just revealed their Vacation Bible School themes for 2010. They have two curriculum options, the Holy Land Adventure for next summer is titled “Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace“. This looks like a very exciting theme and is sure to bring the Bible to life for thousands of children.

The official website for Group’s Egypt VBS is now online. From what I’ve seen so far, this looks like a solid theme and a great way to teach about the story of Joseph. Like other Holy Land Adventures, you will also teach a good deal of Bible background and customs of ancient locations.

My Review of Group’s Egypt VBS

Check back later this summer and I’ll offer a more detailed review of this VBS theme. Right now they have the basics on their website, but I’m looking forward to learning more.

Our church is doing the 2009 version, Rome: Paul and the Underground Church. This may be the first time a VBS has been done at this church that wasn’t Lifeway. It is very different in set-up but I think the teachers are excited about the change. I have been very impressed by all aspects of this VBS – especially the field test reviews. It’s nice to know that the program has actually been tested.

Our Church did Rome last year and it was the highlight of our whole year. It was an all-church VBS with ages 2 – 82 participating and having a grand time learning and priasing God together.

Our church, Concordia Lutheran in Louisville, Kentucky, will be hosting a Group Publishing VBS University Party on Saturday, April 24, 2010 for the Egypt theme.

From Group: “We’ve created a brand new VBS training event – and we hope you’ll be a part of the fun. Based on tons of feedback and hands-n training, we revamped our VBS parties and designed a new program called VBS-U. And you’ll love it! This hands-on training shows directors and volunteers how to dig into VBS Pro (upgraded VBS Web Toy Box), use VBS Spotlight, set up Giving Spree (the online VBS registry), train volunteers and raise funds, plan, coordinate & execute thier best VBS yet! Plus structured networking sessions help leaders coordinate and sharing larger, higher cost items. Bonus: Participants will make some of the awesome decorations shown on the Decorating Places video!”

In the coming months, you will be able to find a VBS U in your area by searching on the Group website or checking the list of hosting churches in the VBS catalog that will be available in Nov/Dec. You will also be able to register on-line to reserve your spot. If you’re in the Louisville area, we hope you’ll join us for this fun and exciting event!

It doesn’t officially say on the website and I haven’t received my kit just yet, but my experience is that there is usually one copy of the student handbook for your review and then you can look them over and order the number you need. Starter kits are shipping out next Wed 12/9, so I will know concretely sometime after that.

We are hosting one of the very few Training sessions at the church I work for, Western Oaks Christian Church in OKC. If you are interested, you can call the church 405-789-8812. We are in the process of mailing out letters of invitation. Also, we will have the dates and times on our website.

Just wanted to let the Louisville area know that the VBS-U party is THIS SATURDAY – May 8th! Walk-in Registration is $20. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Egypt curriculum and you will be able to make and take some of the marketplace crafts.

We are doing the Egypt VBS this year and are getting exciting about it. The music leaves a bit to be desired, and crafts are overpriced as always. However, I did attend a VBS U event and got some great craft alternative ideas and well as decorating ideas. I was just browsing David C. Cook’s catalog and stumbled upon the book “How to Raise a Modern Day Joseph” — it’s a practical parenting guide. I thought this might be a great “Orange” way to pull parents in after the Big Event (VBS), playing off the theme. I just ordered a copy of the book (along with three other books — oh the trap of Amazon free super saving shipping!), so we’ll see if it’ll work!

If you’re looking for a better preschool option for your Egypt VBS you may want to check out Joseph in Egypt Preschool VBS from Christian Ed. Publishers. Written especially for 2- to 5-year-olds, this five-day preschool VBS program includes Bible stories, snacks, crafts, and games with reproducible student sheets and colorful visuals. Book and CD-ROM or download. Your little ones can travel to the Marketplace before the older children but can also enjoy the stories of Joseph (from prison to palace) written at their own level. Crafts and games in the Preschool Leader’s Guide are preschool-friendly. Check out this blog for more info

Were there any churches near the DFW Area (TX) that had done Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace VBS?

Our church is doing this theme as well; however, I am unsure why this is a theme for Bible school. I am in charge of all Arts & Crafts, as well as decorations, and I’m not sure there’s much I can do without offending someone. I think it’s very strange to use this as a theme for VBS because the ancient Egyptians worshipped different gods. I don’t really care, but I know where I live, people can get very over-sensitive about stuff like this. Any suggestions?
