I agree that this lesson IS right on with the scripture. Verses 13-18 speak of it being "customary" to speak to the wise men leading me to believe that the king only did it because he was supposed to. Also the wise man Memucan says that the queen has to be dealt with so that the other women in the kingdom would not rebel, not because it was the right thing to do necessarily.

"10 On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him ... 11 to bring before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty to the people and nobles ..."
"12 But when the attendants delivered the king's command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger." (1:10-12)

King Xerxes sinned by being drunken and prideful, was "furious and burned with anger" and probably called the counsel to justify what he wanted to do anyway. I think it is clear he acted out of anger -- sinfully -- and that "Later when the anger of King Xerxes had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what he had decreed about her" (NIV 2:1) could mean that once he was sober and rational, he realized his mistake.

I have enjoyed some of the lessons on this site - but this lesson is way off scripturally. No where does the Bible suggest King Xerxes made a bad decision from anger - if anything it shows his wisdom in consulting counselors to make a wise desicion. This lesson would better focus on 'sometimes doing the right thing is hard' - ie the king had to banish the women he loved because of her rebellion to his authority and its potential impact on society. Please review this lesson.
