Hi everyone
I have just been appointed to a Christian Education Associate position in a united church and one of the first things I was asked to do was to look for a new collection song to sing when the offering is being taken up in Sunday School. They have used the same song for years (Dropping, dropping dropping dropping, hear the pennies fall...). I have searched on the net but so far have found nothing...any one have any ideas?
Thanks so much

Hi, my name is Terri. I'm 39 and am currently attending a Baptist church in a small town in Southern California. I was raised Lutheran, but have for all intensive purposes, converted to Southern Baptist. My husband and I have 2 children, ages 6 and 7, and we are all actively involved in our church. They attend the Christian school there and AWANA. Hubby and I volunteer at the school when we can (we both work full time) and are the TREK leaders for the AWANA club. We also lead Children's church 1 to 2 times a month. And I volunteer to help with VBS. Last summer was my first year doing that and I'm looking forward to finding out where they place me next year.

I'm always looking for ways to make AWANA more interesting and fun for the Jr. High age kids. It's a rough age to keep them interested. :D

We have a separate building that we use for Kid's church and it is held after SS during the regular church service. The leaders are rotated on a volunteer basis and are generally the parents of the kids that regularly attend. It's left up to the individual leaders what they would like to teach during that time. For example, my husband and I have Kid's church 1 to 2 times a month and have just started an ABC's of the bible. (Not the one I've seen listed here, but similar) We also have a couple of the high school age kids in there to help out and let them run some games that the kids would play in AWANA and they have a snack (Cereal) and then the lesson and some crafts, or songs added in. Depending on the main service, we could go an hour and a half to two and a half hours. Average is about 2 hours though.

I just got a mailer from Group Publishing for their parent's newsletter called "the Parent Link." This seems like a great idea and a big winner for almost any size church. The cost per month is something like $8, but the newsletter they offer is a really high quality. What a simple way to encourage parents at your church.

Here is their website: theparentlink.com

Let me know if you have any experience with this product.

Sara,
Great question. I think it depends on the purpose and context of your VBS. Many churches think of their Bible school as an outreach event and most publishers market their curriculum that way. If that is the case, then the missions component would seem out of place if you were trying to be missional to unchurched kids.

But if your VBS is mainly for christian kids from your church and others then having a missions aspect makes a lot of sense.

At our church we limit our missions component to a special offering for an ongoing mission project with poor children in Haiti. That way it's a connection for the kids and gets the children thinking outside their own wants.

I have been talking to different VBS leaders, wondering if VBS should have a missions component. If not, why? And if so, how can we get our children involved in the work of the Kingdom, and how can we make it meaningful?

We have recently had our grade 1-6's memorize the Books of the Bible and would like to share what they've learnt with the entire congregation. We used a couple different songs, a lot of repetition, sword drills etc to memorize them, but we're having a hard time coming up with something creative for in front of the congregation. Any ideas?

I opened this post thinking, "Ah, I will find the answer to how to get my kids to behave at church." While reading the posts, a voice spoke to me...these are children, teach them the ways, but remember they are my children."
In the church building, I think we can expect them not to run circles, yell, or destroy property. And expect the parents to enforce that. Behond that, we can teach by example and our words. But remember, these lessons may take years to be learned. You could not learn to read until you learned letter forms, phonics, etc.
Take heart and have patience that the lessons you teach today are setting a firm foundation for their spiritual life as adults.

A number of years ago, our church used a novel approach to teaching in our Sunday School classes. We used a chronological series based on the "Creation to Christ" curriculum that many of our missionaries were using in tribal ministry. I adapted it to our Sunday School for preschool through 6th grade. We used teaching teams for each level, and grouped the younger kids by ability, not age (ie. readers and non-readers), so pre-school through 1st grade children were together, 2nd & 3rd grades and 4th thru 6th. All of the kids had the same lesson each week, with activities geared to their understanding. The entire goup met for about 20 minutes at the begining of the session for an introductory puppet skit or people skit, singing, etc. before going to their classes for the Bible lesson.
The advantage of having all the kids on the same "page" was that families could discuss the material during the week and parents and older children could participate in the skits/opening activities. There were over 50 lessons, and we did not meet during the summer, so the material lasted for over a year. Also, since the material was not dated, we could interrupt it without spending money on curriculae that we never used.
A side benefit was that many people who would never teach a class participated in the drama activities.

Hi everyone! I'm Jon from Lancaster County, PA. I am involved in an inner-city ministry in nearby Lebanon, PA. Inner-city is a little different story than most of what is talked about here, but I can still glean ideas, etc. Lets encourage each other along here!

I am beginning a 4 week study during children's church on creation. I have searched the net for ideas, games, crafts, etc., to get the truth across to my kids on a level they will understand and most importantly be able to defend. I have found some; however, I haven't been very satisfied with the material. It has either been to advanced, or too babyish. I have kids from K - 5th grade. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi everyone! I'm Margie, living in Philippines. I am one of the fruits of Sunday School and VBS. And, by God's grace, is now using by God as one of his teachers in this ministry.

I'm 24 years old and working here in Parañaque, Philippines for almost 1 month. Every Saturday and Sunday I go back to my home in Cavite and give my time in the ministry. I am also part of youth ministry.

I love sharing my life to all the children I know. I'm so much blessed of what God had done and still doing in my life. I want to share the children how much God loves them too in order for them to realize how important it is to have a relationship with HIM. I want then to grow with faith and obedience to our Lord. I wanted to be used by God effectively.

I thank God for this site!!! This is a wonderful one! It give encouragement and motivation to ministers like me. May we all be friends here!

God bless!
