It's been a while since we've done a forum giveaway, so let's make this one simple.

Reply to this post saying why you love Jesus.

I'll use random.org to pick a winner Wed 17 March 2010

The only catch is I can only ship to US addresses, so if your outside the States you'll just need to give me a US drop point (or send it to a friend).

Time for a little levity here in the forums (and perhaps an element of confession). So, what was your most embarrassing moment related to children's ministry?

The more people who share, the better we will all feel! :)

I'm working on a really fun & massive contest for all kids ministry bloggers. I'm going to launch it this Sun/Mon. But I wanted to give forum readers a sneak peak. It will basically work like an NCAA tournament, but with readers voting on who moves on to the next round.

NOTE: This is my draft ordering, some lower seeds will change before Sunday.

I welcome your feedback on the seeding, but it's going to be subjective. This is the best of the 100+ feeds in our blog list. You can see my more editorial ranking from a few months back 10 ten rankings

This will be different because the voters will decide.

Here is a great question from a reader via email:

Question: Is the church regulated by any laws that determine what the adult to child ratio has to be? In otherwords, if you have 10 kids, you need one adult, 20 kids needs 2 adults, etc... This question came up at our recent VBS meeting and it caused some concern among our volunteers. We want to follow the law...if there is one. But we do not believe that the church is governed by the same laws as the public school or daycare centers. Thanks for your advice on this matter.

My Response:
I am not aware of any laws in my state in regards to churches. I think the legal risk would be there if something bad happened and they could show an unsafe ratio of kids in the program.

stocksohio on "Biggest Cultural Trends Affecting Childrens MInistry"

I've asked this in other forums (maybe this one too - I can't remember), but I haven't really gotten any good answers before. The conversation usually seems to get side-tracked.

Here's my question:

What do you think the biggest cultural trends are facing the children of America today? How do we deal with those trends in our ministries?

Here's the beginning of my list, but I'm curious what other people think:

The access to and use of electronics by kids at younger and younger ages.

The growth in social media.

Immediate access to vast amounts of information.

Divorce and related family issues.

The pressure to grow up quicker and remain in adolescence longer.

Increased exposure to other cultures and people. The world is literally at their fingertips.

The relative immaturity of the preceding generation. I'm not quite sure how to phrase this one, but so many parents are so interested in being "cool" and reliving their youth through their kids, that I am certain this impacts younger people.

Economic Issues

Entitlement mentality

Shortening Attention Spans / Increase in multi-tasking

Changing definition of family

Post-modernism

Increasing hostility / ridicule towards Christianity

Increasing sense of pluralism amongst kids

It's a bit stream of consciousness, but it's what I could think of off the top of my head. What do you think about these issues? What other issues would you add?

We just began something new in our children's ministry. On Wednesday evenings, our children all meet together for 15 minutes, before going to their classrooms. We have themed nights. For example, puppet night, skit night, video night, etc.... My problem is that I am running out of ideas for skits on my own. I did not purchase a "skit book". I need some ideas for some funny skits or puppet shows, with real biblical teaching! Any ideas?

I asked this over on facebook, but I thought I would ask it here too:

I'm waiting to receive my copy of the new Collaborate book:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Collaborate-Family-Church/391474385213

which I am anxiously waiting to read and review. In the meantime, what other books are you reading about or related to Children's Ministry that you would recommend? What about books on elementary education that would be useful for teaching kids in a church setting?

Hey, I am at a large church outside of Columbus, OH. We are adding a community group aspect to our educational ministries. We have Sunday School and Community Groups now. The issue is that we have people who are in community groups and not sunday school, which we are encouraging. BUT, there kids are now not at church for Sunday School. To tackle this we are adding a kids teaching time to the Community Groups called Kids Community. Is there any good curriculum that would be easy to teach in a house setting with multiple aged kids.

This is a totally selfish question, so I will preface it as such. I am looking for new ideas for things to write about at my blog. I was actually thinking of doing a series of posts with other users from here at Ministry-to-Children.com, but I haven't asked them yet, so we'll see if that happens.

So, here's my question? If you could tap into the minds of a number of different people involved in all different aspects of Children's Ministry, what two or three questions would you ask them about Children's Ministry in general, working with kids, practical tips, cultural issues, etc? What are the hot button issues in your children's ministry that you would like to get some input on?

If we come up with some good ideas, I'd love to start a series of articles answering the question. If you have a blog, and you're interested in participating, let me know that too. I just thought I would throw the idea out there and see if anything sticks.

Thanks for indulging my selfish question.

My church is pretty young and we haven't ever done VBS before. We have a ton of our own kids, and live in pretty kid-dense neighborhoods, so I'm thinking some backyard clubs would be the best way to get the ball rolling. I have checked into CEF 5 Day Clubs, but was wondering if there are other options out there? Something packaged but that we would do the presenting? We'd like something colorful with good music cds that would be easy to market with fliers, banners, etc. Any suggestions?

Henry Zonio from Elemental Children's Ministry recently wrote an article for Children's Ministry Magazine on Apologetics for children. It is an interesting article, and definitely worth a read.

One of his conclusion is,

"When we unintentionally give children the message that their faith in God needs to be defended, we imply a faith that’s wimpy at best and devoid of truth or power at worst."

What do you think? How do you approach apologetics with kids?

I've been amazed lately (and always before that) about how different size churches approach kids ministry different. For me in a small church, it's almost 100% about knowing the kids, their families, and ministering from that relationship.

When I talk to friends in the big churches, they are really focus on systems, collaborating across campuses, and staffing issues.

It almost seems like a totally different world. I guess that's why so many small church people keep reading our website.
