What do you provide for kids who are at church for more than the one hour? We currently provide a traditional Sunday School class and a large group/small group worship, but want to move toward only large group/small groups. Does anyone do anything else different? I am director for kids Kindergarten and younger. My counterpart in 1-5 grades is in need of ideas as well.

At our church the kids go to the adult worship service for the first 15 minutes, that gives them a change of pace between SS and kids church. But with younger children that transition might be hard.
I've heard of churches structuring Sunday morning like a 2 hour VBS. They include regular rotations and make the whole thing very high quality. It would take some extra planning and volunteers, but it might be an option that would make the time more manageable.

Our church has had success with our regular sunday school class for 1 hour starting at 10 am. Than during regular services we have our childrens church which lasts the same time as our services. The children really seem to enjoy this.

We are starting two hours this fall. What does your Children's Church look like, how does it differ from the regular hour? Any tips would be very helpful.

We actually built a small building seperate from our church for our children's church. I am the regular sunday school teacher and right now there isn't much difference as far as what is taught. The children's church has sometime's a little more time as services may run longer than an hour. I am planning with help with our children's church teacher to teach our children the old testament during the 1 hr sunday school class. That way she could focus on the new testament. Right now our children love both classes. It beats having to sit in during regular services which pretty much bore the children.

We have a separate building that we use for Kid's church and it is held after SS during the regular church service. The leaders are rotated on a volunteer basis and are generally the parents of the kids that regularly attend. It's left up to the individual leaders what they would like to teach during that time. For example, my husband and I have Kid's church 1 to 2 times a month and have just started an ABC's of the bible. (Not the one I've seen listed here, but similar) We also have a couple of the high school age kids in there to help out and let them run some games that the kids would play in AWANA and they have a snack (Cereal) and then the lesson and some crafts, or songs added in. Depending on the main service, we could go an hour and a half to two and a half hours. Average is about 2 hours though.

I teach a children's church class that last up to 2 1/2 hours. It can become a task to fill all this time; I use a combination of lessons, songs, games, crafts, video clips and memory work. I list most of my original content on Kidsministryresources.com
