Group Publishing has announced their Vacation Bible School theme for 2010. It’s called “High Sea Expedition: Exploring the Mighty Love of God.” This new VBS material features an adventure at sea, including sailing ships and a pelican character. Mariners and ocean lovers will want to learn more about this theme.
The official website for High Sea Expedition already has some information. You can learn about the Bible stories and Bible Buddy characters. I’m looking forward to seeing their field test videos, but for now it is exciting to see the theme.
I was reading through the Group forums and the core users of Group VBS are very excited (and relieved) that the 2010 theme has been announced. One person even said, “I am glad that this is a high sea voyage w/o being pirate.” Others were talking about fishing nets and decorations.
My Review of High Sea Expedition VBS Theme
I’m waiting for more information, but check back later this summer for my detailed opinion and review of this Vacation Bible School curriculum.

We went to another church last week and we practiced our craft ideas on them. We chose cheap and recycled stuff.
one night we cut some donated poster board into bookmarks and with thinned glue covered it with tissue paper ,let it be wrinkled to look like water. add some seaweed/green. turn over on to waxpaper so it won’t stick and write their Bible verse. punch a hole in one end for a ribbon or yarn. turn over back to water side and add 4 or 5 fish stickers(Dollar General $1.00)
For older children we cut blue and yellow file folders into 2 on the fold, then fold each into prayer journals add 3-4 pages of paper folded. Punch a 1/2 hole into the cover X2 and into the folded side of the paper to match the cover. Let them thread in plastic lacing and a few beads. On the fronts they may use stencils(borrow from someone who scrapbooks) to write their name (Jaycub’s journal) and fish stickers or boats and palm trees.
If you remember making a snow globe, we took babyfood jars(talk to a day care)Paint the lid and let dry while you add blue color to water, add a pinch of glitter(No, more is not better) if you can find small plastic fish. If not ,small fish stickers to the outside of jar. make Bible verse stickers on return address labels on computer to stick on top on lid.
Cut the lids from stfoam egg cartons and stick a dowel or pencil into middle hump, maybe add a bit of clay to underside to help hold mast(pencil). Punch a hole in the bottom and top of a 10×10 piece of paper for a sail and slide on to pencil. Place some stickers on side of boat. add a piece of red ribbon or plastic for a flag. Let children race them in child’s small pool, or rain gutter.

Ideas to set up the galley on the high seas ship
My church group is going to Savanah Ga. on a mission trip,we are doing vbs for them{high seas}we are on a small budget. we need help with decorations. We have borrowed to books and tapes from another sister church to get started. Any ideas would be helpful.
I completely agree with the craft ideas being kind of week. We bought a lot of our crafts from Oriental Trading too. Day 1 We are creating a message in the bottle using a bottle kit from Oriental Trading along with the kids making a bookmark with the message for the day with foam stickers from OT. Day 2 we are making the pillows from Group along with a periscope the kids will color (we are thinking they may not finish these and carry them over for a filler on the next day too). Day 3 they are decorating treasure chests from OT and them we are making a pop up with the daily message inside or having them write things they are thankful for on gem cut outs. Day 4 they are decorating the picture frames from OT. Day 5 they are going to pick a name out of the phone book and writing a short message to them on postcards from OT. We will also be making the blankets on that day, but we are buying our own fabric.
Hey,
We get our crafts from Oriental Trading. They take the top VBS themes from Group and Lifeway every year and offer great crafts based off of the VBS theme, and sorry but they are better and cheaper than what Group is offering. We are doing the picture frame day 5 (with a pic of their group), the wooden snake day 3 (found in the western theme section), also the ship scratch off, and the spyglass. On day 2 I am making whales that they can stuff (sew blue fleece fabric in the shape of a whale and sew it around. at the tail area, leave it open with two pieces of fabric they can tie closed to make the tail. and let the kids stuff and decorate.) Hope this helps.
I’m in the same spot as all of you – in charge of crafts and the ones offered are not going to fill my 25 minute time slots. Please share your ideas!
Thanks!
I agree with Heather about the crafts – I put that walnut boat together in 30 seconds. Our church has done Gospel Light in the past and they always have several craft options to choose from. I really like the biblical points for this High Seas VBS, but that’s where my love stops. We’re scrapping all their craft ideas and I’ve come up with my own.
I was asked to come up with all the crafts for VBS and I did not like the craft ideas, if you could share any good ideas you have found I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
We used real walnuts with toothpicks and packing peanuts for are boats and I printed off the sails on microsoft word myself Cost $3.00 for 50 kids. We painted sailor hats that day from oriental trading co. with sea stamps and fabric paint and fabric/permanent markers the kids loved them and they could wear them all week. The next day we did full size pillow cases the same way and wrot Gods word is comforting. We did sand art in baby food jars with crushed sidewalk chalk and salt-also very inexpensive. I used their clipart and printed pics of salty with God’s word is life changing to glue to the top of the jar lid. The last day we painted faces with verses and sea creatures and had bubble art which is blue food colring in bubbles to go with the blankets.
I totally agree! If you have any ideas that you would love to share I would love to hear!
Thanks!
I’m in the same spot – in charge of crafts and REALLY don’t like the suggestions that they give in the program! I’d love to hear what you have thought of!
Thanks!
We usually use Gospel Light’s VBS, but I really liked the format & bible studies for High Seas Expedition. I am a little disappointed in the craft ideas that they offer. They are too easy to put together & don’t offer enough for the children to do to fill up our time in the crafts area.
I love Group’s VBS but…. Thinking of the Egypt one with the great story for the week. But wondering if my kids will miss Chadder, we have a theater set up every year for about the past seven years… Anyone else tried to leave the Group production? I have tried the Market Place, but for a series on Wednesdays nights. HELP
FYI–Augsburg Fortress has announced their VBS 2010 theme as Baobab Blast (safari)…web page is available at http://www.thevbsplace.org
