SKY VBS logo

Group Publishing has revealed their new VBS theme for 2012. It’s simply titled Sky. The tagline reads, “Everything is possible with God. Mark 10:27″

The early artwork on their website shows airplanes, kites, hot air balloons, and lots of clouds.  Each day of this program challenges kids to trust God and shares a Bible story from the life of Jesus. You can see some SKY VBS decorating ideas on Pinterest. You can check out their official website for music samples.

One departure for Group this year is the “Imagination Station” rather than traditional VBS crafts. The basic idea is to substitute different object lessons in place of the normal Vacation Bible School crafts.

Regular customers of Group VBS will be pleased with this theme. My main reservation is the broadness and challenges presented by decorating the sky.

Some readers have noted this theme appears similar to LifeWay’s Amazing Wonders Aviation VBS. After a closer look, SKY Vacation Bible School uses flight more as a metaphor for trusting God. The LifeWay theme actually uses air travel to introduce other real world locations.

Daily Bible Points (and Hints from our Website)

  1. No matter who you are…trust God! The Bible story is from Matthew 8:5-13 where a Roman officer trusts in Jesus. So you might find inspiration from our Bible lesson on that passage and coloring page of a Roman soldier.
  2. No matter how you feel…trust God! Their second day’s story is from John 11 when Jesus raises Lazarus back to life. You might find our free lesson plan about Lazarus a helpful for extra preparation.
  3. No matter what people do…trust God! The 3rd day Bible story is from Matthew 26:36-27:31 where Jesus is arrested and put on trial. You can compare our lesson about Judas betraying Christ for optional ideas.
  4. No matter what happens…trust God! On Thursday, the teaching time focuses on Jesus’ death and resurrection. We have several lesson related to that theme, but you should definitely browse our Jesus is Risen coloring pages.
  5. No matter where you are…trust God! The final day’s story is based on John 21:1-14 when Jesus makes breakfast for his friends after his resurrection. Check out our free lesson called Breakfast on the Beach.

We also have coverage of the new Vacation Bible School 2012  curriculum and themes for VBS 2012.

Tony, just wondering if you would recommend using the Sky VBS? My experience with Group Publishing is that they tend to be too generic and not strong enough biblically. I’m concerned that if our churches uses this VBS, the gospel of Jesus’ saving grace won’t be clearly communicated to the kids unless we make some major amendments to the lessons. It also concerns me that a evangelical publisher would product a Catholic product. This makes me skeptical of their product. Just wondering if anyone else has presented this concern to you.

This year is better on those issues, especially with all five Bible lessons based on Jesus. They don’t focus on childhood conversion, so some churches will want to emphasize that aspect more than the curriculum.

From what I understand, the Catholic version is actually re-written by another company to make sure it fits their church teachings.

Group always blows me away with their music and even if I don’t go with their main VBS I always get their music because of how good it is but this year they dropped the ball with the motions. They look terrible and as if they were made up on the spot. If you’re picky about motions or even care about having good motions that go with the music you will probably have to make up your own.

This looks interesting! I like how they combined the sky theme with the story of Jesus.

Hello, we are considering this idea for our VBS. I was wondering if the material is King James Version and do you have material for the youth. Thanks so much.

Amanda, if you haven’t already received an answer, you might try the official page. You can download a full catalog for Sky and that might help answer your questions.

Amanda,
Sky is not KJV but when I spoke to the customer service lady she said it would be easy to change the scripture preference to what you want to us. We use KJV at our church and I was going to try to cover the verses on the posters with KJV ones. I ordered the starter kit and we are going to give it a shot. Hope this helps you out!!! :)

Gospel Light VBS always as a KJV version. They currently have five different themes available with KJV resources.
