“Dirty Water” Bible Object Lesson about sin – 2 Timothy 2:22Seen any music videos recently or tuned into the Disney Channel after dark? If so you might feel as if you’ve stepped into an alternate universe where purity, even amongst our children, is no longer a welcomed value. I won’t hop on my soapbox today and expound on the dangerous path our culture has taken but I don’t mind encouraging you to teach kids about the importance of purity. Even if your kiddos aren’t old enough to understand the full concept of purity as it pertains to some areas, they will get the basics if you teach them.
I found that with just a few bottles of water and a few other supplies you can easily present this purity object lesson. I find the following verses ideal for presenting a foundation for this teaching.
1 Corinthians 3:16  Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?
2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2 Corinthians 7:1 Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
Psalm 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.
Get Ready to Teach
Place two bottles of water on a small table in the teaching area. Keep an extra bottle handy but hide it so kids can’t see it. Remove the labels to make it easier to see the water. I used scissors to cut them away. Have a bowl of dirt handy and a small spoon, like an infant spoon. Crack open the seals on the bottles so you can open them easily during the teaching.
Teaching Purity
Here’s a great script for teaching this object lesson.
Man, it’s hot today. I sure could use something to drink. Oh look, this looks delicious. (Take a drink from one of the bottles.) You know, earlier we were talking about purity. These bottles of water remind me what a soul, a pure soul that loves God probably looks like. See this? There are no contaminants in this water. It’s pure and clean. No Sea Monkeys there! I wonder what a soul looks like when it isn’t pure. Let’s see.
(Remove the lid from the second bottle and add a few spoonfuls of dirt.) Now what do you think? Who wants a a sip of that? Not me! You know why? Because I can see the dirt, that’s why! But sometimes, the dirt isn’t that noticeable, at least not to us. (Open the second bottle and add just a pinch of dirt to the clean bottle of water.)
Now who wants a drink? Why nobody wants to drink that because we all know it’s got dirt in it, we saw the dirt go in. God is like that too. He can see even the tiniest amount of dirt in us, even if others can’t see it. The good news is God loves us and He wants to help us live a pure life. One that pleases Him. Who’s ready to give that a try?
