How These Rankings Work

We started with a list of over 150 children’s ministry blogs. After hours of research, we crunched all the numbers according to our proprietary fuzzy math. Then we added instant coffee with just a hint of cinnamon. Here’s how the factors breakdown.

G.R.S. = Google Readers Subscribers

This comes from the the Google Reader API. This year’s number does count multiple RSS feeds, as long as they are linked from your homepage. For most blogs, this contributed around 20% of their base score.

F.B. = Facebook Shares of Homepage

This is a simple count of the number of people who have shared your blog’s main page on Facebook. It’s a rough way to estimate how socially engage your audience is with your site. For most of our list, this contributed around 10% of their base  score.

PA= Page Authority
This is based on Open Site Explorer’s link graph. More quality sites linking to a blog indicate a positive reputation. This metric accounts for around half of our ranking formula.

PI= Pages Indexed
This is the number of pages from a site stored in Google’s index. It can indicate whether a site has a large collection of original content. Most sites we listed could expect around 20% of their base score to come from this figure.

Bonus = Blog Madness Votes
Last March we let the Internet decide which kidmin blogs were the most popular. So I added a bonus from the final 16 blogs in our tournament according to their total votes.  This indicates a loyal readership that will take action based on your recommendations. This adds around 10% to the theoretical base score, consider it extra credit.

Factors Not Considered

  • Traffic Estimates: These are notoriously unreliable and often mean nothing. Good traffic growth is closely related to all the factors above.
  • Technorati: Their authority rankings fluctuate too wildly to reflect a blog’s long term importance.
  • Personal Preference: My attempt was to make this objective.
  • Comment Counts: I just didn’t have time to sample the comment numbers from each blogs recent 25 posts.

There you have it! Please leave your comments below to dispute the list or it’s math. If you’re one of these bloggers, you can also write up your thoughts on this list on a post on your own site.

Wow, Tony, thanks for including my blog here! I just came to check out the latest list, not exactly that mine would be here since I only launched the blog in March.

Thank you.

Also, I know you and Amy Fenton Lee have a great relationship (she rocks!), so I doubt you’ll need to take me up on this, but if you ever need a guest post for anything she doesn’t have time to provide, let me know!

Thanks Tony, I’m honored to be at such a high ranking…definitely was not thinking that! Though it could have been due to the fact that Jared Massey from http://www.smalltownkidmin.com checks my site each day from his work, home, neighbor’s, and parent’s CPU as well as his iPad 2 (he has one of those right? I couldn’t remember), cell phone and Wii. Thanks Jared. You’re a true friend.

What does one have to do to get a blog considered for next year?

Great question. I just added you to my spreadsheet and you came out around #115 with a score of 13.47

So keep blogging and grow your following, it’s very possible to move into the list next September.

Thanks, Tony, for putting this together!
Even if you didn’t count my bonus for getting into the top 16 in blog madness, I still like you ;)

Seriously, this list must be crazy hard to put together – you’re a great guy for going through all that work.

It looks like I gave the bonus to “West Side Kids” … it’s all worked out now. Thanks for letting me know.

Didn’t Tony mention that you got docked major points for being West of the Rockies? I’m not sure how Greg managed to overcome that to come in #4. I certainly wouldn’t suggest that cash changed hands. Oops, did I say that out loud? :)

Greg came to Lexington to apologize for living out there.

Tony thanks for not telling them about the cash! Er…uh…I mean…

I’ve got about 300 uncounted GRS’s picketing outside Childrensministryonline.com as we speak. They are holding signs, and chanting… “Links won’t work! Links wont work!” over and over.

Thanks for the list Tony, good stuff!

For what it’s worth, I have about 380 subscribers to my feed….

Reply

Tony Kummer September 27, 2011 at 2:14 pm

That’s a tricky one. I only when with the reader count that Google Reader supplies via their API … so it’s not an exact figure but should help compare to other blogs on the list.

In no way does this affect the greatness of this list, and only post this follow-up comment to make an observation. :-)

This has always been weird about the Google API. The Google API shows that Children’sMinsitryOnline.com has 350+ subscribers; but the Feedburner Feed (google also) shows 700+ subscribers on all feeds. It’s like Google is arguing with itself. I wonder why the Google API is always lower than the feed subscribers? I had always thought this the same thing.

And I’m super glad that your post finally got Kenny off his lazy blogging butt and back to the keyboard!

Strange.

Sam September 27, 2011 at 9:27 am

Tony thanks for doing this and thanks for leaving out personal preference would have been pretty embarrassing for Kenny. Also does anyone think someone (cough, kenny, cough) should get points taken away because his blog is broken and can’t be linked to, really Tony can’t be linked to and it’s the #1 blog? Anyway congrats Kenny you did it to me again this year. To celebrate I think I am going to get a childrensministryonline.com henna tattoo.
