in Volunteers, christmas

I recently sent out a special newsletter talking about gift ideas for Sunday School teachers and other children’s ministry workers. I want to get your ideas too. What gifts do you give out around your church?

A special dinner serving a good meal …something they wouldn’t normally cook for themselves at home, they come to enjoy the meal and fellowship and don’t have to fix any dishes to bring.

We usually place poinsettias in the church in honor or in memory of someone. I plan to do this for our nursery team.

Hey, here is an idea from a former Sunday School coordinator. Volunteer to help set up rooms or spend extra time giving back to the Sunday school teachers through the gift of time during the month of December. Teachers have many demands made upon them during the holidays. They have families too. Volunteer for the volunteers. Energy, that’s the ticket!

This year I will be baking sugar cookies and putting them in a cute little Christmas bag with a bow. It will have a message on the ribbon. “Thank you, God”!

I’m the children’s director for a fairly large church and we have almost 200 different volunteers working with children. So, the idea of a gift for each worker can be daunting. Desiring God, though, lifted the burden for me. This year they had a Christmas special for buying bulk numbers of Seeing and Savoring Christ. 48 books could be bought for $68 including shipping. And with DG’s policy of pay what you can afford, if $68 is a stretch they will work with you. When Christmas comes around next year check out DG’s website or give them a call about a month out to see if they are having a bulk special. It worked well for me.

I gave all my teachers mugs this Christmas and added a package of hot cocoa and a cookie in each. They really appreciated it. I also had each of the kids in the different classes color a “Thank You” card for a specific teacher. The teachers got the cards with the mugs.

In the past we have gotten bulk card that you make from Oriental Trading company. On a sunday the kids make the cards and put a general message in it and then sign their name. Then the children’s pastor gets gifts to fit the worker and gives them a card that the kids have made. You can get some really cut things in bulk from ABC distributing at abcdistributing.com. We have gotten some really cute things at great prices and the teachers love them. Then you add the handmade card from one of the kids and it is perfect.

Most teachers do not expect a gift but I always do something very simple and very inexpensive. One of my all time favorites is joy miniature candy bars. You can put them in a bag, basket, or Christmas container found at Dollar Tree. The special part is adding a note that reads “Just as Jesus brought Joy to the world, you bring joy to our Sunday School Department”
