This Sunday will mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States. In many ways this was a defining moment for a generation. What special events does your church have planned? Take the poll and then leave a comment to share your ideas.

9/11 Children’s Ministry Ideas

Only the oldest kids in your ministry will even remember 9/11. For most it will be the most recent of historical events they have only heard about. Here are a few ideas to mark this special day in your Sunday School or Children’s Church.

Download our free God Bless America coloring pages. We created this resource especially for this anniversary. It would be a flexible choice for those who don’t want to go too in-depth about the events of 9/11. We have also uploaded a Firefighter coloring page, thanking God for everyday heroes.

The Revival Fire blog has some ideas for marking September 11th in your ministry. These include sharing your own testimony about that day, praying for our country, or planning mission to Arab countries.

There have been some helpful conversations on the Kidology forums about 9/11 and church activities. Some churches are focusing on honoring first responders.

Scholastic has posted resources for teachers and families on their website.  These includes tips and full lesson plans. This might be a good place to generate your own ideas too.

We are incorporating a special prayer time during the worship service. We try to keep worship “worship” and not stray into elements that aren’t directed to God. We are encouraging people to attend a special memorial service that our choirs are participating in that is held in the afternoon.

Our kids are joining together to read the (abbreviated) timeline of events of 9/11. We are including special patriotic songs for the service including Lee Greenwood’s ‘God Bless the USA.” Of course, we will say The Pledge’s too. We borrowed some firefighter bunker gear from a local FD, to display and are trying to also retain some first responder or police officer gear too. We have made yellow memorial ribbon pins for everyone to pin on their clothes and remind them of the anniversary and to pray for those affected throughout the day. We are also reading an excerpt from President Bush’s speech in which he quoted part of the 23rd Psalm, and our Pastor is including this passage in his sermon.

Our church is sponsoring a community wide event. We are having food, games, music, and a memorial service for those families affected by 9/11. We are also honoring military, police, firefighters, and others who had members pass in that attack.

We will have 2 middle school boys carry the American and Christian Flags into the sanctuary, then they will ask the congregation to join them in each pledge. Then the smaller children will hold a Bible open and ask the congregation to say the pledge to the Bible. (The words for each will be on the screen.) A Vietnam vet will then lead us in a special prayer for our nation, specifically the military and first responders.

To insure that our children know that America was founded as a Christian nation, we wrote our own Bible School program this summer. The theme was, “In God We Still Trust”. The children met a Biblical character in the opening exercise, and later met an American historical character in history land. Each evening the children learned how the Biblical and historical characters had something in common.

Lea,

Would you be willing to share more information about the program you did this summer? I’m so impressed by that idea…what a wonderful way to help the children learn the truth and bring it to life for them! We would love to incorporate something like that with our children. Anything your willing to share is greatly appreciated!

On September 11th & 12th our church will be taking shifts working a booth at the York County Fair in York, PA. The booth is being ran by an Organization Called “Somebody Cares”. This is a out reach booth to the public so we can provide a listening ear and prayer to those who want it. Were hoping to reach out to those who are dealing with this time period or anyone that feels that there’s no hope in these tough times, who are lonely and just looking for someone that cares. If they show an interest, maybe we can put them on the right path so they will eventually find and receive Jesus.

We are joining thousands of United Methodist participating in Serve 2011. Our local project is an outreach to local people in care facilities. For weeks the children have been making cards and door hangers for the residents. We will go to the care facilities and sing, visit, and distribute the children’s projects to the residents. All United Methodist are encouraged to participate in this project by finding a way to serve on this day. There are lots of project ideas at http://www.rethinkchurch.org/article/project-ideas-serve-2011
