Sunday School Lesson from John 1:10-18
If your church follows the Revised Common Lectionary, this teaching plan would correspond to Year B – 2nd Sunday after Christmas, Gospel Reading – John 1:10-18.
Opening Activity – And the Word Became Flesh – What’s the Word
Supplies – index cards, markers
Prior to class, write each Bible verse below on a set of index cards (one word per card), using a different color marker for each verse. Then mix up the cards and have the kids put the verses together, by memory, or by using their Bible as a guide. Then read through them together as a class.

John 1:10-18 Kids Bible Lesson
Have you ever thought what it would have been like to be around when Jesus was on earth?
I think about baby Jesus, and Mary having to change His stinky diapers. I think about 5 year-old Jesus, learning how to read. I think about 10 year-old Jesus, playing tag with His buddies. I think about 15 year-old Jesus, enjoying a big slice of fresh baked bread with His mom. I think of 20 year-old Jesus, working as Joseph’s apprentice in the wood shop. And then, of course, I think of the Jesus we know most about – adult Jesus, who shared God’s news of forgiveness, love, and grace to all who would listen.
There is so little in the Bible about Jesus while He was growing up. But He did grow up just like you and me. He was just as much a person as we are. He laughed like we do. He cried like we do. His hair grew longer, his feet got bigger, and he grew older, just like everyone else.
But that’s not all there is about Jesus. Jesus was special. The MOST special person there ever was or ever will be. And do you know what made Him so very extra special?
Jesus was 100% human just like us, and 100% divine, just like God.
The Bible says that “the Word became flesh, and lived among us.”
‘The Word’ is the Bible. It is all the truths about God and His promises to us; His love letter to us. And the ‘flesh’ is that word in human form.
And who do you think that is? Jesus! Of course! Jesus is the living, breathing, walking, talking, laughing, crying, hugging Bible. He is all of God’s promises and love sent to earth just for us.
Jesus really is the MOST special person to ever be, because He is 100% human, and 100% divine. Jesus is love.
Activity A – And the Word Became Flesh – Bible Verse Challenge
Supplies – Bibles
Verse – John 1:14
Pass out Bibles to students. Bibles should be closed and sitting on the table face up in front of each child. When you say go, have the kids look up this week’s Bible verse. As each child finds the verse, have them stick one finger on the verse and quietly raise their other hand. The first one to find the verse gets to read it to the rest of the class.
Help younger kids and new kids find the verse by following these steps.
Look in the Table of Contents for the book you are looking for. Make an effort to show them if it is found in the Old Testament or New Testament to help them in the future. Then open the Bible to the page number listed in the Table of Contents.
Show them the large numbers in the text, known as the chapters. Flip through pages until you find the large chapter number you are looking for.
Then scan through the text with them pointing out the smaller verse numbers until the correct number is found.
Activity B – And the Word Became Flesh – Acting Like Jesus
Supplies – none
Divide kids into groups of 2-5, and assign them an age of Jesus (toddler, tween, teen, adult). Then give them a few minutes to come up with a scenario, showing how Jesus would handle a difficult situation with love (bullying, disobedience, etc.) Then invite each group to act out their scenario for the class.
Closing Prayer – And the Word Became Flesh
Ask for a volunteer to pray for the class before leaving, and encourage them to thank God for His promises and love in Jesus.
