Freedom in Christ Object Lesson for Sunday School (Galatians 5:1)

The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays—probably because I come from a military family. Something about seeing the national flag flying high that makes my heart sing! As I get older, I can see how valuable freedom is but there is a greater freedom than the kind our founders and veterans have afforded us. It’s freedom in Christ!
Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Jesus had a purpose and that was to set us free! Don’t let this holiday pass by without teaching kids what freedom in Christ means.
What You’ll Need

• American flag
• Christian flag
• Strips of cloth (12 long pieces)

Prepare to Teach
Display the flags in a respectful manner or lay them flat on a table. Ask a volunteer to stand in the front of the church. Wrap him up in the cloth strips. Put one over his eyes, wrap up his hands and feet too. (Don’t wrap too tightly.)
Let’s Teach
Hey everyone! Can you tell me what today is? That’s right it is the Fourth of July! (Pick up the flag.) This flag is an emblem of the freedom we celebrate. (Wave the flag!) Don’t you love that? I know I do but as much as I love this there is a bigger, better freedom to have. Let’s talk about that! Have you seen my volunteer? He’s not looking very free. I wonder, volunteer. Can you shake my hand? Can you wave to us? Can you see me? Can you take one giant leap? No of course not! You can’t do any of those things because you are not free.
Before Jesus came into my heart, I was like this. All tied up! Now, because of Jesus I have freedom. I can worship him! I can praise him! I can love other people! I can talk to God without worry. I am FREE! (Unwrap the volunteer.) It’s better to be free, isn’t it?
(Pick up the Christian flag and wave at. Lead everyone in a song like Amazing Grace.)
