Children’s Sermon (John 14:23-29) Holy Spirit Object Lesson

You and I know that God’s Word has a supernatural quality–it not only empowers, frees and comforts us but it is infused with the Holy Spirit. How many times have I read a verse and all of a sudden, it kind of “jumps off the page.” You see something unique and amazing for the first time even though you have read the passage about a dozen times already. I know have.

Other times, it’s difficult to remember what you’ve read. You want to apply His Word to a situation in life but you just can’t remember what God said. In times like that, the following verse applies.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26

Oh, I do love that verse! Kids do too! Teach kids this truth! It will comfort them and empower them. Here’s a cool object lesson that will help you bring this truth to them.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Gallon-sized zippered storage bags
  • Small toys or office supplies
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Timer
  • *Optional: CD player and CD

Before class, fill a couple of bags with the items. The more the better because you want to make it difficult for children to remember what’s in them. Place the bags on the teaching table and cover them with a towel. Have pencils and paper handy, kids will write down what they remember. Play music in the background to raise the excitement level.

Say: How many of you have lost your school shoes? You get up in the morning to get dressed but you take an hour looking for your shoes? That’s me! I’ve done that! At times like that, when Mom is mad and I’m running late, I really wish I had a helper to help me. It’s hard to remember things sometimes. Right?

Let’s read this verse in 1 John again. See? God knew that sometimes it was hard to remember things, even His precious words. So what did God do? He promised us that the Holy Spirit would help us to remember the things of God. We need him, he will help bring to our remembrance God’s word but we have to know it before we can remember it, right? You can’t remember something you don’t know. That’s why we would should read God’s word every day.

Now let’s play a game! I want to show you how important it is to have this Helper, to help you remember.

Choose four volunteers. They will work in teams of two. Remove the towel and set the timer for one minute. The kids have one minute to write down the things in the bag. Then cover the bags. They get one more minute to write down more, if they can remember them. Encourage the partners to work together to remember everything.

  1. It’s an intriguing lesson, but I was looking for John 14:22-26 and found myself in I John. I’ll hang on to THIS lesson idea, because it’s a keeper!
