How To Make Resurrection Eggs – Items Needed List and Video

Print Friendly and PDF

Resurrection Eggs are a wonderful Easter Activity for families. Here is how you can make them at home. Download our directions below or get the printable Resurrection Easter egg cards from Bible Games Central to make a simple paper version.

Need something to fill up your colorful Easter eggs besides jelly beans and melting chocolate? Consider the memorably educational fun of a “resurrection egg” hunt. You may have kids hunt for the eggs or simply present them in a carton, but here are a dozen possible ideas for stuffing eggs with true symbols of Easter.

As you open the eggs with students, you can pause to talk about the meaning behind each item, looking up verses as you go. To make things extra challenging (or lengthen the lesson), you could even place verses in separate eggs, and have children match the verse with the corresponding symbol. Of course, there are many possible items that you could use. Feel free to adjust or add/subtract/swap as best fits your group. These are just a few potential thoughts to get the egg rolling, so to speak…

Resurrection Eggs Items List

Note: some of these require a little more imagination or are subject to multiple interpretation, but hopefully still get the point across.

Palm Branch… When Jesus first came into Jerusalem, people waved palm branches in honor of Him. (Use a small leaf or cut paper branch)
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”  -John 12:14

Crackers… Jesus broke bread while sharing the Last Supper with His disciples.
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”            -Luke 22:19

Coins… Judas did a very bad thing and betrayed Jesus for just a few coins.
When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.
-Matthew 27:3

“Rope” (yarn)… After they brought Him to trial, Jesus was whipped with a big rope.
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. -John 19:1

Cloth (Felt)… The bad people teased Jesus and put a robe on Him after beating Him up.
After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.     -Matthew 27:31

Thorns… Because Jesus said He was a king, they took sharp thorns and made a crown.
and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. -Matthew 27:29

Nail (Thumb tack)… Soldiers took big nails and put Jesus on the cross by His hands and feet (no, He was not hung by tacks, but you know…)
This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. Acts 2:23

Cross… Jesus was killed on a big cross, which hurt more than anything possible.
Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). -John 19:7

Vinegar “sponge” (cotton ball with vinegar)… While Jesus was on the cross, He got very thirsty, and they sent up a sponge of vinegar.
A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.         -John 19:29

Spices (Cloves)… When Jesus was buried, they put spices on His body to preserve it, sort of like a mummy.
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.     -Luke 24:1

Rock (stone)… When Jesus was buried, a large stone was placed over His tomb so that nobody could come and take His body.
So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.      -Mark 15:46

Empty!!! Why is the last egg empty? Because the tomb was empty! Jesus is alive! He is risen!!! J
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Matt 28:5-6
