Use these free craft ideas for in your children’s ministry or Sunday School lesson on Balaam’s Donkey (Numbers 22:1-40).

The story of Balaam and his talking donkey is a fun and interesting one to describe and act out with kids. It’s also a great opportunity for some donkey crafts! These ideas help to tell and celebrate the Biblical account. A “Talking Donkey Puppet” recalls the animal and what she did. A “Clothespin Donkey” is a fun three-dimensional craft that is simple to put together. Let’s get crafty! 

Craft One: Talking Donkey Puppet

You will need:

  • Paper Bags
  • Construction paper or cardstock
  • Glue, tape, or staples
  • Scissors
  • Google eyes 
  • Decorative elements as desired (yarn, cloth, etc.)
  • Markers or crayons

Procedure:
1. Decorate the bag with facial elements, including a mouth, drawn or google eyes, and nose (drawn or cut from paper).
2. Add arms and legs (cut from paper) and ears.
3. Add verses or captions if desired.
4. Add extra coloring or decoration, including a cloth or string tail. 

5. Use the puppet to recall or tell the story of Balaam. 

Craft Two: Clothespin Donkey
You will need:

  • Clothespins
  • Crayons or markers
  • Glue or tape
  • Stickers or decorations (optional)
  • Construction paper or cardstock 
  • Scissors
  • Pipe cleaners or yarn (optional)

Procedure: 

  1. Draw and cut a donkey body out of cardstock or construction paper. 
  2. Add features like ears and tail, using paper, cloth, or string. 
  3. Color in facial features and other elements. 
  4. Attach clothespins to the donkey, allowing it to stand as an option. 
  5. Add verses and captions to the donkey’s body, or separately. Use to remember or tell the story!

God opened a donkey’s mouth…and saved Balaam!
