Family Devotion to use on Halloween

This devotional is designed for families to be used on the night of Halloween. Halloween can be a scary time for children and so this devotional focuses on the fact that we can trust Christ in all situations. Happy Halloween and have fun trick-or-treating!

Pre-Devotional Questions:

  1. What is your favorite part of trick-or-treating?
  2. Does Halloween scare you?
  3. Does Halloween need to scare you?

Halloween Devotional:

Halloween can be a scary night where people play tricks and dress up as monsters; it can be a time where people focus on the bad of the world instead of the good, but you do not need to be scared just because people are acting scary. Trick-or-treating can be a fun time where we go out and collect candy from our neighbors and have fun with our friends and family. You and I know that God is bigger than anything that is scary in this world. This doesn’t mean that life will be perfect, but it does mean that we can trust God. We do not need to walk around in fear because we have a God who loves us and cares very deeply for us and God doesn’t want us to be scared.

The Bible says,

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7)

Questions for Reflection

  1. Why don’t we need to be scared? (Answer: God is bigger than the scary things of this world)
  2. Can Halloween be fun? (Answer: Yes, it can be a time where we collect candy with our friends and family)
  3. What should we do when we are scared?

Bible Application

When we are scared we should seek God. God loves us and He loves when we talk to Him. God wants us to come to Him with everything, He wants us to come when we are happy, sad, mad, or scared. How do we seek God? (give them time to answer). We seek God by praying to Him. Let’s pray now for a fun and safe night!

Prayer Moment

Dear God, thank you that we do not need to be afraid when you are with us. Thank you that we are always able to come to you and that you are taking care of us. Help us to have fun and stay safe tonight. We love you so much, amen!

Family Activity:

Help your kids put on their costumes and take them trick-or-treating!

  1. Thank you – love this , I have always been confused about whether it is correct to go along with Halloween. What do you think of regular yoga ? We don’t have Christian yoga in Zimbabwe , Africa yet. I don’t say the mantras and certainly do not acknowledge the Buddha . I find it extremely relaxing physically.
    Kind regards
    Anika

  2. Hi Anika, I am glad you liked the lesson. In regards to yoga I think it’s okay if you use it simply as a stretch class, but if you are struggling with the issue then pray and ask God what He thinks.
