Great Commission Object Lesson (Matthew 28:16-20)

Last week, I was thinking of a way to illustrate the power of one kid telling another about Jesus. This Bible object lesson with dominoes is what I came up with. The basic idea is told in the video below. This would be perfect for a children’s sermon on the Great Commission.

Children’s Sermon on the Great Commission – Matthew 28:16-20

Supplies Needed: I got a simple box of dominoes at Wal-Mart for under $3. I also used masking tape and a marker to make a face on one of the dominoes.

Scripture Connection: With this object lesson you could read any of the key passages about Evangelism and Witnessing. Especially the Great Commission. Here are a few of my favorites:

And Jesus came and said to them, โ€œAll authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.โ€ (Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.โ€ (Acts 1:8 ESV)

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, โ€œWhom shall I send, and who will go for us?โ€ Then I said, โ€œHere am I! Send me.โ€ (Isaiah 6:8 ESV)

But the LORD said to me, โ€œDo not say, โ€˜I am only a youthโ€™; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD.โ€ (Jeremiah 1:7-8 ESV)

The kids had so much fun with this children’s sermon – they kept asking for me to repeat it weeks later.

  1. Hi. I am teaching a group of 6-9 years old children at a Summer Camp (called Tawawa) sponsored by the 3rd Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church that will be held July 6-9 at Dennison University, Ohio. The theme of the camp is: “FULFILLING THE GREAT COMMISSION: THE EVIDENCE OF DISCIPLESHIP” and it is based on John 13:31-35. However the main thrust that they want the kids to take home with them is this: “EACH ONE, REACH ONE”. My wife and I are doing two puppet skits that deal with the main thoughts of John 13:31-35 but we also wanted to find some way to tie in helping the children to know the impact they can have on spreading the good news of Jesus to others. So, your object lesson really fits well. Thanks for the really neat lesson. Also, I now have an additional resource for Children’s ministry.

  2. I like your idea. I was looking for an idea to share in our Sunday School upcoming Emphasis Day Program. One of the subjects will cover evangelizing.

  4. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT OBJECT LESSON ON TELLING OTHERS ABOUT JESUS AND THE EFFECT ONE CHILD CAN HAVE WHEN HE OR SHE IS WILLING TO SHARE THE GOOD NEWS THAT JESUS LOVES THEM AND WANTS TO SAVE THEM. I AM A SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER FOR FOUR AND FIVE YEAR OLD’S AND ALSO WORK IN KIDS WORSHIP. THIS WILL BE AN EXCELLENT TOOL WHEN I HAVE KIDS WORSHIP NEXT SUNDAY. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. This is an amazing idea! I was also thinking this could be a good object lesson to show how like dominoes, a choice in the right direction/wrong direction builds momentum. Dominoes! Brilliant!

  6. Thank you SO much for this! We are doing virtual Children’s Moment time on Sunday mornings and I was looking for a Visual to share, instead of me just talking to the camera for 10 minutes. This is so perfect! I’m drawing faces on my dominoes and can’t wait to share this!
