Children’s Sermon: Fathers’ Day – Jesus’ Softer Side

Use this Father’s Day children’s sermon to give kids a new way to think of their father’s love.

Children’s Sermon

Say, today is all about fathers, the men in our families. What are some manly things your fathers do? (Suggestions might be watching or playing sports, working with tools, working at certain types of jobs, doing certain types of chores, shaving their face, etc.)

(Show your picture of a hen and her chicks.)

Does this picture look very manly to you?

It doesn’t look very manly to me because it has a hen, a female chicken, with her baby chicks. But Jesus, a man, said…

(Read Matthew 23:37b.)

“How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings…”

Why do you think Jesus wants to gather us up like a hen gathers her chicks?

I think it’s because He wants to keep us close to love and protect us. And fathers are like that too, aren’t they? They’re manly, but they still want to keep us close so that they can love and protect us.

When you think about your fathers today and when you think about Jesus, think of a hen pulling her chicks close.

Closing Prayer

Father God, we thank You for fathers. You are our Heavenly Father, and You gave us our human fathers to love and protect us. Help us to love and respect them, just as we love and respect You. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
