Control Yourself! The Fruit of the Spirit Part 9 Craft Ideas
The crafts here focus on self-control, aiming to help children understand what it is and how and when we can practice it. This last (but not least!) element of the fruit of the spirit points us to the importance of making positive and obedient choices, even when it’s hard. A “self-control pizza” considers opportunities to exercise self-control. A “Self-Control Stoplight” reminds us to stop and pray for God’s help when we need to practice it. Let’s get crafty!
Craft One: Self-Control Pizza
You will need:
- Paper plates
- Construction paper or cardstock
- Staples, glue, or tape
- String or pipe cleaner (optional)
- Scissors
- Decorative elements as desired
- Markers or crayons
Procedure:
1. Divide the plate into sections, however many “pizza” slices you prefer to decorate.
2. On each piece of the “pizza,” describe a situation that would require self-control.
3. Decorate the plate to look like a pizza, adding colors and toppings as desired.
4. Add verses or captions, and (optional) an item to hang and display the pizza.

Craft Two: “Self-Control Stoplight”
You will need:
- Crayons or markers
- Glue or tape
- Stickers or decorations
- Construction paper or cardstock (include red, yellow, and green colors)
- Pipe Cleaner or string (optional)
- Scissors
Procedure:
- Cut a rectangle out of black (or dark) paper.
- Cut circles out of red, yellow, and green paper.
- Glue or tape the circles onto the backdrop. Add words and captions to remember the importance of slowing down to pray when self-control is needed.
- Add extra decorations and verses, as desired, along with a string or pipe cleaner to hang the decoration.

Verses or Captions to Consider…
A man without self-control
is like a city broken into and left without walls. -Proverbs 25:28
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age -Titus 2:11-12
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. -Hebrews 4:15
When we need self-control…
Stop
PRAY…think…
Go!
I can pray for self-control when…
