We all get the same question. Sometimes it’s a kids trying to make a scene in children’s church, sometimes is a little girl crying after Sunday school. Everyone is asking the BIG SANTA QUESTION. How do you handle it?

We emphasize Christ over Santa, and we give three gifts at Christmas. They have one from “Santa”, yet around the age of 6, my girls have asked if Santa is real and I simply say, “What do you think?” They have all three said that he isn’t because they don’t believe in magic, which is the only logical explanation for Santa and flying reindeer, and I proceed to tell them the story of St. Nicholas and how legend turned him into Santa Clause. They aren’t heart broken at all. They love it when they figure it out themselves and we prioritize truth with them. We stumbled onto this with our first child when she asked, after doing Operation Christmas Child boxes, why kids in poorer countries don’t get a visit from Santa. It made no sense to perpetuate the lie, and they handle it beautifully!
We acknowledge the individual judgment of the parents while encouraging them to understand that the gift of Jesus is enough reason for celebration and that mommy and daddy want to give you (child) gifts to remember that God gave us a wonderful gift of His Son.
Parents seem very comfortable with this plan.
What about Santa is a story that the devil has used to cover up the real meaning of Christmas. I really couldn’t participate in your poll as the options listed above would not be any that I would choose.
I believe that we are ministers of truth and should speak the truth.
I agree with Scott when it comes to my own children. We have put an end to the fairytale Santa with the elves and the North pole. However, there are some families in my church that have a non-believing spouse. My husband doesn’t believe in God and he held onto the Santa story until our kids were old enough (in his opinion) to hear the real story. I think we need to be very careful that we don’t inflame family issues over an innocent question.
None of the above!
How about: Santa comes from the story of the real and once living Saint Nicholas.
