Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come? That’s from the Bible—Ecclesiastes 8:7! What a great time to share an object lesson pertaining to God’s control of the future! All you need are a few calendars to illustrate how God is in control—one from the passing year and one for the next. Place them in your teaching area so kids can see them as you teach. Follow the teaching prompts below to teach this object lesson.

“Look guys, this calendar is for last year. See?” Hold up the old calendar. Flip through the pages and show the different months. “See all the great holidays we had? I also had a birthday and some other special days but guess what, I can’t use the calendar for this year, can I? Each year the calendar changes and all those special days fall on different days.”

“See this calendar is for this year. Look at all these months of special days—all the Fridays and holidays…this is going to be great. I bet I could go ahead now and circle some important dates. Maybe I should go ahead and plan the whole year now. what do you think? Wouldn’t that be great? I could put in appointments, special events and soon my calendar is as full as the old one. I like planning my weeks and it is good to plan but remember this—only God knows our future. No matter how many appointments I make or how many circles I draw, the only day we are promised is this day — today!”

“I know a lot of people get scared about tomorrow. They wonder what is going to happen but we can trust God. He is control of our lives and all of our tomorrows. Let’s say a prayer and ask God to help us remember that He knows all of our days. Let’s ask Him to manage our calendar this year!”

Dear Lord, I gave you today and all my tomorrows. I am not worried about my future because I know you are in control. Help me, God to live the way you want me to. Amen.
